Postnatal care following a Caesarean

Some useful tips on how to care for yourself following a caesarean.

Ladies a caesarean is classed as major surgery, please do not overdo it, your body requires rest and the passage of time to heal.

Keep your wound clean and dry, take off the shower head and direct shower just off side from the wound itself, carefully pat dry, do not rub as this may aggravate the stitches. Wear high waisted, comfortable cotton pants which will not interfere with the scar.

Protect the wound from pressure - when you sneeze, cough or laugh by gently holding the area to alleviate any pressure. If you are travelling as passenger, perhaps use a cushion or pillow to protect your wound from the sharp edges of the seatbelt.

Following your caesarean, you may feel slightly constipated due to the type of pain relief medication used following the operation. Ensure you drink plenty fluid and eat a healthy balanced diet with good amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fibre which can be sound in cereals. Soup and salads are great options - ask family & friends to make some home made smoothies, salads or soups containing fibre, fruit & veg. Massaging the abdomen in a clockwise direction can also help with constipation, ask your midwife or GP for gentle medication should the problem persist.

Coconut oil and grape-seed oil are great for hydration - Once the scar has healed over this may be used to keep the skin hydrated and supple, rub in a small circular motion.

A Maternity Nurse is a fantastic help following a Caesarean section they can help with feeding including presenting baby for breast feeds, assists with baby & mother cares, can help with household laundry, meal preps, shopping,take the baby out for a walk, other light chores as required we have a wealth of experience and knowledge and can advise on any aspect of the prgenancy journey for you and your baby!. If you feel unwell or your scar is inflamed, has pus seeping, is foul smelling or if you are concerned consult your GP Immediately as the area may be infected and you may require antibiotics.
